What are some Have to have programs?

I'm not new to Linux or Ubuntu or anything, but would just like to know some great programs you all are using, so I can check them out. use them if I like them. Because I really have been using my system for every day tasks. I just wanted to see if there was some neat stuff to mess with?

    That's a very general question

It really depends what you're trying to do with your computer. Do you spend a lot of time in productivity suites? Social networking? Programming? Just wasting time?

Give us something to go on here..

Actually I do all of the above. With a lot of free time on my hands, I do a little bit of everything.

    I'll take a stab...

    Blender
    Scribus
    Inkscape
    Celestia
    Neverball
    Gimp
    Chrome
    Google Earth
    Compiz Settings manager
    Cairo dock

    That's enough for starters

Oh - almost forgot. World of Goo.

You'll have to pay for this one, but it's lots of fun!

I suggest geany, it's a excellent IDE for programming, I use it for Python but it supports loads of other languages. Very lightweight too

VLC for multimedia (I find Totem is getting finnicky with what it will play while VLC will play everything I throw at it).
GoogleEarth (I'm a teacher so it's a brilliant tool for me).
Fieldworks (SIL Linguistics/Anthropology program just released to Ubuntu and is only at Alpha stage but I love it).
Firefox and Chromium, each has its own use for me as I keep my Automotive stuff (email etc) on Chromium while everything else is on Firefox.
Evince, PDF viewer and is part of the standard install.
Gbrainy, brain twister game part of the standard Lucid install and the only game I have on my laptop.
Pidgin, because Empathy has some pretty serious security flaws which I have informed Gnome about.
Skype, I have friends who only use Skype so I have it for them.
Meld Diff Viewer, I find this while trying to figure out how certain applications changed with newer releases. I use it often now.
GtkPod, the only application I have found that will load stuff onto my 6th Gen iPod 120gb Classic.

That's my must have list on my laptop. My desktop is set up as an entertainment centre so I can watch Dvds etc. so I would add DVD::Rip to that list.

songbird's a good iTunes clone. has limited iPod support (worked with mine), shoutcast, customizable themes, automatic lyrics uploading, etc. And frozen bubble is a good time waster.
