cant ping windows box hostname unless I add .local

How can I ping a windows box without needing to put .local on the end of the hostname?

    Thanks

What command are you using to "ping"?
    EasyBCD.

    should just be a simple

    Code:
    ping localipaddress
The local IP should look something like 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x

Re: cant ping windows box hostname unless I add .local

well I can ping the ip address. I want to be able to ping the hostname. I don't always have the ip address and I want it. The problem that has brought this forth is that I am running apache on my system and it is set to connect to a mysql database on our network. It works fine in windows, however in Ubuntu it dies on the host name and I am required to stick the ip address in my code because it cant resolve correctly.

That is the root of my problem. I would however, like to be able to ping a hostname without having to put .local on the end of it.

Are you trying to ping form inside the same netowrk or outside. I guess that's what is confusing me.

Add the IP to the /etc/hosts file, should work

    192.0.0.0 hostname
    There's no place like ~/

Add the address to the /etc/hosts file for name resolution. Such as
    Code:
    10.x.x.x hostname
    EasyBCD.
