    8.04LTS update broke my machine

After the update that came through last night when I try to boot I get

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. Press any key to continue

I had this problem some time ago with 8.10 trying to use that and wound up having to totally rebuild my whole installation with 8.04 to get past it. As I recall my other option would have been to switch to another Distro.

This is a slightly older Compaq small footprint machine with 512m Ram and a 1 meg CPU only. Still, sure would be nice if I can get it to keep working.

Any suggestions about Error 18 appreciated.

Re: 8.04LTS update broke my machine

Found some solutions, most requiring a lot of command line magic. Decided to go for one of two easy fixes: 1) fresh install on a HD that fits the BIOS for this machine or 2) Use another Distro that is not so fat that it gets the kernel into this problem with the BIOS.

For now I will just take it from the Error 18 message and select the previous kernel to boot. When I fix it I will put in a small HD 40Gb and do a whole new install. Cumbersome but it works. Certainly feels a bit like Windows, these problems...
