I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit working on my Laptop - Toshiba Satellite C655. I need to keep both Windows 7 and Linux - this is essential for my web design work (I use a MBP most of the time). I was able to run the installation process only after setting acpi=off.
When I boot into GRUB and select 1st option - ubuntu w/linux 2.6.32-21 generic, I then hit 'e', enter acpi=off, and press Ctrl-X to boot up. However, I still get a list of strange strings, ending with "child_rip+0x0/0x20" and then a blinking cursor at the end. I can't type anything in and have to hit the Power button to restart the PC. how can I get past this and straight into Ubuntu GUI?
I know next to nothing about Windows 7, so I have no idea what extra steps I have to do to get around this. I did do some preliminary research and it seems that Toshiba laptops have this same issue, but I haven't been able to see a workaround so far. Any suggestions? I've heard so much about Ubuntu and I want to see if it's really true as to what is being said about it.
