    Samba public share not working

    Code:
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    #
    #
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    #
    # Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
    # commented-out examples in this file.
    # - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
    # differs from the default Samba behaviour
    # - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
    # behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
    # enough to be mentioned here
    #
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.
    # A well-established practice is to name the original file
    # "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
    # testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
    # This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
    # which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
    # However, use this with caution if your smb.conf file contains nested
    # "include" statements. See Debian bug #483187 for a case
    # where using a master file is not a good idea.
    #

    shawn is in the public group and can read/write through ssh. I have been trying for 4 day's to get public working, but nothing is going. I keep getting "access denied".

    Any help would be appreciated. I am new to linux, so I am still learning.

    Re: Samba public share not working

    Well first, here's a readable version of your configuration:

    Code:
    [global]
       workgroup = APARTMENT
       server string = Samba Server %v
       netbios name = server
       dns proxy = no
       log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
       max log size = 100
       syslog = 0
       panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
       security = user
       encrypt passwords = true
       unix password sync = yes
       passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
       passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .
       pam password change = yes
       map to guest = bad user
       usershare max shares = 0
       usershare allow guests = yes
    [homes]
       comment = Home Directories
       browseable = no
       writable = yes
    [shawn]
       comment = "Shawns Folder"
       path = /home/shawn
       writeable = yes
    [ace]
       comment = "Jasons Folder"
       path = /home/ace
       writable = yes
       valid users = ace
    [public]
       comment = "Public Drive"
       path = /home/public
       writeable = yes
       valid users = "shawn ace"
       create mask = 0770
       force group = public
       directory mask = 0770
       read only = no
       writable = yes
       create mask = 0775
       directory mask = 0775
       valid users = %S
    [printers]
       comment = All Printers
       browseable = no
       path = /var/spool/samba
       printable = yes
       guest ok = no
       read only = yes
       create mask = 0700
    [print$]
       comment = Printer Drivers
       path = /var/lib/samba/printers
       browseable = yes
       read only = yes
       guest ok = no
    What I don't like about it, is this (in the public share definition):

    Code:
    valid users = %S
    I don't think that is correct. Please try with a list of users, I don't think there are many, anyway.

    EDIT: You do have a list of users, but you overwrite it with the statement above! What did you do that for?? Just remove that line, restart samba, and then it will most likely work.

    Re: Samba public share not working

    Like I said, I am new to linux, I think I see what happened, I put my shares in the middle of another, that could be the cause. I'm going to do some editing and see if that fixed it.

    Let you know soon

    Thanks

    Re: Samba public share not working

    I redid the code like
    Code:
    [global]
       workgroup = APARTMENT
       server string = Samba Server %v
       netbios name = server
       dns proxy = no
       log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
       max log size = 100
       syslog = 0
       panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
       security = user
       encrypt passwords = true
       unix password sync = yes
       passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
       passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .
       pam password change = yes
       map to guest = bad user
    [homes]
       comment = Home Directories
       browseable = no
       writable = yes
       create mask = 0775
       directory mask = 0775
       valid users = %S
    [shawn]
       comment = "Shawns Folder"
       path = /home/shawn
       writeable = yes
    [ace]
       comment = "Jasons Folder"
       path = /home/ace
       writable = yes
       valid users = ace
    [public]
       comment = "Public Drive"
       path = /home/public
       writeable = yes
       valid users = "shawn ace"
       create mask = 0775
       directory mask = 0775
       force group = public
    But still no good. Decided to go back and do the notes after I get it working, for your benefit . I don't care about hos secure it is yet, just want to get it working first.

    EDIT: any way to tell log on attempts and failures? I do ot see it in the log file.

    Re: Samba public share not working

    Just a bit of info, I tried getting to the share using sbmclient and got the error:

    Code:
    master@server:/var/log/samba$ smbclient //10.0.0.1/public -U shawn
    Enter shawn's password:
    Domain=[APARTMENT] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.4.7]
    tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    But verified I can get to home Dir:

    Code:
    master@server:/var/log/samba$ smbclient //10.0.0.1/shawn -U shawn
    Enter shawn's password:
    Domain=[APARTMENT] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.4.7]
    smb: \>
    Hope this helps. I'm at a lost, everything I look up does not seem to work.

    LOL I seem to find the answer after posting.

    I changed:
