I was able to install DraftSight, but when I try to run the program itself, it doesn't start. I checked and I am running wine 1.2

Oh well, keep using it on my windows machines until the linux version is available I guess.

Is it a resource hog? That's one thing I never liked about Solidworks is that its just too huge and seeing as how they come from the same company...

I'm not an Autocad user but I downloaded Bricscad Linux version for my friend to try. He said it was good but that was just his opinion. Anyway see here:

Well I finally got DraftSight to work with Wine. My graphics card must be a little slow for drafting, but I don't need a super fast machine for that (that's what my quad core PC is for), but it will be good for quick sketches and home projects.

Hopefully the full linux version will be coming soon.

I'm looking forward to the linux release! Its been a while since I've last used AutoCAD, but I'd like to dabble with some of my old projects again!

Re: Free 2D CAD Software from Dassault

I finally got mine working with Wine.

They still need to tweak some of the print settings. Some of our engineers were testing it who don't have CAD licenses here, but none of the print settings would generate a decent print. Anything sent to our large plotter would be out of scale (a D size print would end up with a 4" x 6" print on a mostly blank D size sheet). Dassault doesn't seem to be able to replicate the problem.

Our general opinion is "Looks good, can't print from it." But, it will be fun to use on my laptop for random sketches and home projects.

I am also Bricscad user(free version 10.4.9).Its very similar to Autocad and Draftsight feels the same.

Installed just now in wine and its a very good 2D cad.I am looking forward to linux version of this.

What about 3D?Is there any good alternative ?cause Bricscad does not support modeling commands such as extrude, revolve etc..

Re: Free 2D CAD Software from Dassault

DraftSight is based on ARES, which is Autocad alike CAD software, developed by German company Graebert GmbH: http://new.graebert.com/. They already released ARES for Mac and also a native linux version in beta stage. You can download and test it after registration: http://new.graebert.com/index.php?op...id=105&lang=en . DraftSight seems to be the same piece of software, but without 3D support. Dassault announced its linux version for later this year, so did Graebert. Another vendor, Bricsys, already officialy released their native linux version of Bricscad. Too early imho, because it`s still work in progress. ARES for linux seems to be in better phase of development. However, it`s interesting to see big company like Dassault Systemes announcing real autocad alternative for linux. But it`s sad, that it takes them so long.
