Free 2D CAD Software from Dassault

Just announced this morning, Dassault Systems (makers of SolidWorks)released for free their Beta version of DraftSight.
    http://http://www.3ds.com/products/d...ight-overview/

They claim on the site and in press releases that they plan on releasing a version for Linux later this year.

A couple of us have already installed it on our work PC's (WinXP and Win7) and the interface is exactly like AutoCAD and can open existing files created with AutoCAD.

I have to wait until tonight to try it out on my Ubuntu Laptop to see if I can run it with Wine.

We're trying to understand how Dassault is able to create something that looks and feels almost exactly like AutoCAD since Dassault and AutoDesk don't exactly play nice. (I have been an AutoCAD user for 9 years and a SolidWorks user for 4.)

This is excellent news! I have used SolidWorks which is a wonderful package so I have high hopes for DraftSight. AutoDesk will be kicking itself for not releasing a Linux version of AutoCAD sooner -- especially since the number of Linux users now outnumber Mac users.

Re: Free 2D CAD Software from Dassault

The feedback at our office has been very positive so far (for the Windows version). I definitely plan on testing it out on my Karmic Laptop tonight.

We don't see this replacing our CAD licenses in our office anytime soon, but it looks like a better option than CADopia which our Senior Engineers use to review prints and make markups before submitting to our Drafting Department.

After playing with it for half of the day, Dassault put a lot of effort into it. It's as easy to customize as AutoCAD (once you get used to the lingo differences).

From what we have read, they plan on offering add-ons for a fee to add different functions. The licenses ($250 per seat) add IT support, and access to all of the newer add-ons. For what we do in 2D, the Free version has more than we need in a CAD package.

Now, how do we ask that they hurry up with the Linux version?

Re: Free 2D CAD Software from Dassault

I tried installing it with wine but I couldn't get the program to open. I ran the installer (DraftSight.exe) and it said it was installed successfully. But, when I try to open the desktop icon, nothing happens. Even when I would go through the Menu on the top of the screen (Applications - Wine... DraftSight.

    Did I miss a step?

One problem with the program on the windows side that I found yesterday. The print function has some bugs in it. If I tried an A Size drawing (8.5" x 11"), the print would be off-center to the point that a lot of information is cut off. (Even selecting "Print on Center of Paper" doesn't help.) Also, when printing larger sheets on our plotter, the Print Preview is fine, but the finished print, (C Size = 17" x 22") ends up with a scaled version of the drawing (down to 3" x 4") in the upper left hand corner of the page.

Just make sure the latest wine 1.2 is installed ......
When it does open a window and you click on the

Install Button ..... (it does nothing)

    Choose the

Options Button ...... ( Single user mode )
then install it all should work ok ...........

    Nice stats!

Almost caught up to Apple. WIndows sure runs the world though. I have Linux and XP on my desktop at home but I don't remember the last time I booted into XP. But since I have it, I guess I'm part of the statistic.

How is this information gathered? How does anybody know what I'm running at home? If it goes by computers sold, mine would show up as XP even though I no longer run it.

There are 6 computers in my house and here is what's running:

    Linux 2 0.333
    XP 2 0.333
    Mac 1 0.167
    Win7 1 0.167

I'm not an Autocad user but I downloaded Bricscad Linux version for my friend to try. He said it was good but that was just his opinion. Anyway see here:
