Ubuntu Server 10.04 Need help getting connection to router/modem

I've just started to bring up a server and chose Ubuntu, I have set everything up from the installation process and that when I try to connect to the server through Firefox it doesn't show up. I have come to the conclusion that it must be the router/modem password in which is WPA2-PSK. Please tell me what to do to input that password into the server so it can access my network. An updated tutorial will be appreciated.

Just a heads-up, I cannot re-configure the router/modem due to it being used 24/7 (near to limit of processes). But there is enough processes to be used by the server and nothing else.

    Kind Regards

Are you asking how to set up a wireless connection on your server?

If the server is setup, did you ever have internet connection.

If you only have a wireless card run the following and post output.

    Code:
    lspci
If the wireless adapter is USB connected run:

    Code:
    lsusb
    Then:

    Code:
    iwconfig
If no wireless extentions are found, you need to get the drivers loaded for your adapter.

    and

    Code:
    ifconfig
The wireless setting go in /etc/network/interfaces:

Sample assuming your adapter is at eth0 maybe wlan0 in your case:

    Code:
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    network 192.168.1.1
    address 192.168.1.99
    netmask 255.255.255.128
    wireless-essid nameofyourRouterID
    mode managed
    channel 8
    wireless-key WPAorWEPheyHERE
Nothing is ever easy, but if it is difficult you must be doing it wrong.

Re: Ubuntu Server 10.04 Need help getting connection to router/modem

(Day 1) Thank you Volkswagner for replying, I've done the following two commands: lspci and iwconfig. It has displayed the wireless driver and showed that is it not active meaning not used.

(Day 2) I am running Ubuntu server 10.04 in a desktop from a USB (Didn't want to effect the C: drive in any way(Boot record)). Also I have followed your instructions and the server has "seen" the router/modem but it has not connected to it. If you would like a small video of my situation shout me out and I will provide you with one.

    Kind Regards

To help diagnose a process of elimination is in order.

Perhaps setting the NIC in /etc/network/interfaces to dhcp will help eliminate any errors with ip addressing. You can do this by commenting out the ip, network, and subnet. Change the word static to dhcp.

You will need to restart networking after making changes.

    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
You may also want to temporarily disable wireless security to see if that is an issue. Some drivers may not support you mode of security.
Nothing is ever easy, but if it is difficult you must be doing it wrong.

Re: Ubuntu Server 10.04 Need help getting connection to router/modem

There seems to be nothing really happening with the packets that it's sending out through the intervals 6, 13, 17, 7, 15 and 3. "No working leases in persistent databases - sleeping". Again I've followed the instructions and I have released the security from the router/modem but I cannot do that again, If you give me your email address I can provide you with screenshots of what's happening with the server.

    Kind Regards

You can post screen shots here for all to see.

Are you using a GUI on your server?

If you call a terminal a GUI, *laughs*, nah I'm not, I don't even know how to "activate" it on the server but I know you can use one in a web browser from another computer but I need it to connect to the network first to do that. Considering that I'm running this on a seperate system (Not Virtual) and I have a webcam that is not good enough to sharpen the text, I'll just have to write all the details down like you were looking straight at the screen next to me:

    Server@Server:~$ iwconfig
    lo: no wireless extensions.
    eth0: no wireless extensions.
    wlan0: IEEE 802.11bg ESSID: "My router/modem"

    virbr0: no wireless extensions.

    Server@Server:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

remove the pond signs and put your Lan IP.

Have you even read my comments? 1. It's wireless 2.You can connect to a server with ANY browser if you install an application like myphpaddress

Please re-read my comments and reply until you understand it first.

    could you post your dhcpd.conf?
