Less than a year's experience with Linux - this error defeats me.
Here's text from the error window:
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/portablelin...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I clicked on the link and it is not accessible to me either so there is no error with synaptic.

Looks like that ppa only goes up through 21 Jan 2009 and Jaunty...
