    Certain websites do not open

Certain websites do not open on any browser on my 10.04. I tried http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/# and those sites were up. I rebooted into windows and it opens.

I changed my dns server to open dns then google dns but did not solve the problem.I have a dsl connection with automatic dhcp.

While googling i read about nsswitch.conf and this is what is presently looks like

    Code:
    # /etc/nsswitch.conf
    #
    # Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
    # If you have the `glibc-doc-reference' and `info' packages installed, try:
    # `info libc "Name Service Switch"' for information about this file.

    passwd: compat
    group: compat
    shadow: compat

    hosts: files dns
    networks: files

    protocols: db files
    services: db files
    ethers: db files
    rpc: db files
    netgroup: nis~
Also when i try to ping through terminal:
    Code:
    varun@varun:~$ ping http://google.com
    ping: unknown host http://google.com
    varun@varun:~$

When you changed nameservers, did you restart? What shows in /etc/resolv.conf?
Also - what happens if you just:
    Code:
    ping google.com

midori actually seems to be quite nice. so far no issues, don't know about security though (this is actually one of the main reasons i normally stick to firefox).

    Yes i did restart.

This is what /etc/resolv.conf looks like-it points to the isp's default nameserver as i had changed it back to it.

    Code:
    # Generated by NetworkManager
    nameserver 218.248.255.162
    nameserver 218.248.255.163

and when i ping google.com it
    Code:
    varun@varun:~$ ping google.com
    PING google.com (209.85.231.104) 56(84) bytes of data.

i think the problem runs deeper than changing browsers.I tried it none the less but did not work.
