    10.04 | Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Issue

Hi, I just recently did a fresh install on a Packard Bell EasyNote R1005 laptop.

I'm just using the connection manager which comes with 10.04 at the minute, however it doesn't seem to be working. I'm not sure whether it is failing to detect my wireless card or what. Going off the HOWTO post a topic guide, I'll post the available information in the hope that someone can help me get my wireless working, or failing that, point me in the right direction.

    Re: 10.04 | Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Issue

    Hello,
ath5k don't work with this Chipset. You need the Mawifi-Driver Version 10.5.6 from http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/

    Connection over LAN required!
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential
    wget http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4126-20100324.tar.gz
    tar xvf madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r*.tar.gz
    cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r*
    make
    sudo make uninstall
    sudo make install
Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf as root, block ath5k and enable ath_pci
    Code:
    ...
    # blacklist ath_pci
    blacklist ath5k
    Restart
    Code:
    modinfo ath_pci | egrep 'versi|filen'
    lsmod | grep ath
    dmesg | grep ath
    iwconfig
    iwlist chan
    sudo iwlist scan

    Re: 10.04 | Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Issue

No f*cking way... Dude, this actually seems to work, although I'm just using this solution for a few hours now. But a few hours without dropping!!!! I don't believe it, never thought there would be a solution for this f*cking card. I actually just ordered a USB wifi adapter for my laptop, cause I basically gave up, but this seems to be hitting the sweet spot.

Anyways, I have had a lot of problems with this card, both in Lucid and Karmic. I read somewhere that installing the wireless-backport drivers should help, but that didn't help for me. Been blacklisting stuff and reinstalling since foreever on my Acer Aspire One A150 (ar5001)

After blacklisting the ath5k driver though the commands gave me some errors. The network didn't wanna connect. with the help of another forum at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1526773 I figured out that my /etc/network/interfaces wasn't correctly configured. I could connect it via the command line, but not via the connection manager.

    I added the following

    # wireless card manual add
    auto ath0
    iface ath0 inet dhcp
    wireless-essid SC1742
    wireless-key s:0000000000000
I included the wireless essid since the network interface first didnt connect.

    Re: 10.04 | Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Issue

Maybe cause this is more recent and a newer kernel, but I can not get this to work. I've tried several ways, and compiled madwifi but still nothing. With Madwifi I at least get ath0 device and it attempts to connect but will never authenticate. Tried changing the wireless router to not have a password and it still will never connect. Have followed this and many other posts to a T, and nothing. Currently i have MADWIFI using ath_pci and have blacklisted ath5k and ath9k, i have ath_pci and ath_hal in /etc/modules

    any help is greatly appreciated
I don't wanna go back to an older version of Ubuntu
this is a fresh lucid install

can i go back to an older kernel for lucid, if so where do i get that?

    Re: 10.04 | Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Issue

I've got a compaq nx9005 with a 3com XJACK 802.11b/g cardbus card, which is an AR5001x+ chipset. It used to work under karmic but broke when I upgraded to lucid, and still refuses to work under maverick. ath5k detected an AR2414 chipset which detects networks but will not allow a connection to (at least) my wpa secured hub. Followed the instructions (sort-of); I disabled ath5k as below, downloaded http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org...current.tar.gz , make, sudo make install then added ath_pci to /etc/modules. Wifi seems to work now but annoyingly will break every time ubuntu issue a kernel upgrade.

Googling this reveals that there are quite a few people in this boat, where ath5k/ath9k don't support their chipset but ath_pci does. Perhaps canonical might like to put the ath_pci driver in the repositories somewhere; (re)compiling drivers at every kernel update is not what I would expect of ubuntu.

    Code:
    http://ubuntucrack.blogspot.com/
scroll down to the bottom half of the page for step by step madwifi installation, worked for me

like mentioned earlier, do not try this if all you have is wifi connection, you need to be LAN connected

Thank you very much! I just used this to fix my sister's netbook that wouldn't connect via wireless before.
