Fresh install (10.04), only the packages that I thought I needed. nm-applet is running, but not appearing in the notification area of the panel. Any ideas to make it appear there?

Right click on the top panel and select Add to Panel then select Notification Area and click Add then Close.

I'm sorry if I was unclear, the nm-applet is not showing in the notification area, which is present on the panel. So there is a notification area. And there is an nm-applet running. But the nm-applet is not showing, in the notification area (or anywhere else), and this last part is the problem.
The notification area isn't showing anything other than a little vertical separator, I'm not sure if there should be more in the area?

I am afraid I suffer from this little niggle as well. This and Gwibber not working are a bit of a nuisance.
Because of this I currently cannot connect to a wireless network. A way to connect to a wireless network would also be helpful.
