Unhappy 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my formerly XP system, and I'm trying to get my wireless network working. I have a Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 wireless adapter connected by USB to the system.

The system networking icon reports "No wired networks".

I'm not sure whether or not the system sees the USB ports... If so, it apparently doesn't recognize the adapter.

I saw a few posts that indicated that this adapter didn't work on 10.04 but it had worked on 9.04.

I'm looking for any info to get this working, including any or all of the following:
    * How to determine if the system sees the USB ports (or is it "obvious" that it does)
    * Should the wireless adapter work just by plugging it in?
    * How to troubleshoot the networking adapter to get it working
    * (If downgrading to 9.04 is likely to solve the problem) how to downgrade to 9.04 from 10.04...

    Thank you!

    * How to determine if the system sees the USB ports (or is it "obvious" that it does)
It's not obvious; it should only recognize the USB ports in 99.9% of all cases. Please open Applications > Accessories > Terminal and do:
    Code:
    lsusb
That means, roughly, 'list all my USB information.' If the device is inserted, it will show up. Post it here and we'll help you get it going.
    * Should the wireless adapter work just by plugging it in?
Only in 75% or so of all cases. Some devices are so new or so old that drivers don't exist in the kernel or they are buggy.
    * How to troubleshoot the networking adapter to get it working
Post lsusb and we'll get started.

Downgrading is not likely to help.

It might use the driver at76c50x_usb. Let's try it:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe at76c50x_usb
    iwconfig
Do you have a wireless interface now?

By the way; I hope I am wrong. at76c50x_usb falls into the buggy category.

Re: 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

lsusb shows the adapter, including e.g. the "2.6" rev number (bus 005, device 002, ID 077b:2219).

The "sudo modprobe" worked, but the iwconfig reported no wireless extensions for either lo0 or eth0...

Re: 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

    (bus 005, device 002, ID 077b:2219)
That is the correct module for your device:
    Code:
    $ modinfo at76c50x-usb | grep 2219
    alias: usb:v077Bp2219d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*
Since a wireless interface was not created, something happened, or more likely, didn't happen. Let's see if the kernel has a report:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep at76
That means, roughly, 'print significant kernel messages with at76 in the line.'

    Aha...

"firmware atmel_at76c503-rfmd.bin not found. You may need to download the firmware from http://developer.berlios.de/projects/at76c503a/".

    Presumably that's the next step?

    Thank you!

Re: 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

Correct. Assuming you download it to your desktop, right-click the tar.gz file and select Extract here. Now move it to the correct place:
    Code:
    sudo mv Desktop/at76_usb-firmware-0.1/* /lib/firmware
Now make sure it has the correct permissions and ownership:
    Code:
    sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/atmel*
    sudo chown root:root /lib/firmware/atmel*
Now remove and reload the module:
    Code:
    sudo rmmod -f at76c50x-usb
    sudo modprobe at76c50x-usb
    iwconfig
Now do you see a wireless interface? Can you click the Network Manager icon, see your network and connect?

I will check in tomorrow. Good luck.

Re: 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

<Posted before I read the post immediately above this one>

I tried downloading the above driver, unzipping it, and doing as the readme says, which is just to run make. The first compile failed because the file net/ieee80211.h wasn't found.

I wasn't able to find that file in the "net" directory under /usr/src, but I did find one under the "linux" directory (specifically at /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic/include/linux/).

The make was actually looking for include files under /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-21/include, so I copied the ieee80211.h from the generic area into the net directory of the "2.6.32-21" area, and tried to make again. It then found the include file, but still gets a slew of what seem like basic undefineds... E.g. WEP_KEY_LEN...)

I then removed the copy of the ieee80211.h I created...

    Thoughts on how to proceed?

    Thank you!

I think I downloaded the wrong file (at76_usb instead of at76_usb-firmware)... I'll try again...

Re: 10.04 and Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 not working

That worked great! Thank you very much!

    But I still can't connect...

My wireless network is WEP-64 bit encryption, and the only WEP options are 40/128 and 128 bit encryption...

Is there a way to add in support for WEP-64?

    Thanks again!

You can drop your password into WEP 40/128-bit. 40 and 64-bit are equivalent.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy
Standard 64-bit WEP uses a 40 bit key (also known as WEP-40), which is concatenated with a 24-bit initialization vector (IV) to form the RC4 traffic key.
