If that is true compare the files /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The output of lspci (on the command line) should help
to identify the graphics chipset you have.
With the Vendor ID and the Device ID you might be
able to find more help for that specific graphics chipset.

When I booted from a a live 10.04 CD, Ubuntu was in 800x600 resolution with the only other option being 640x480.
