I can't figure out why it is dead silent and why I get "access denied" in "capabilities" or why I get no sound.

    Re: No sound "access denied"

followed http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 as I was but decided ,once I got stuck figuring out what the carrd was to get on the site he linked, to start a thread. Messing around a while I decided to not follow the instructions completely.
    Using alsa-source

    1. Type the following to shell: (note: module-assistant is optional, it will compile the package for you) Code:
      sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant alsa-source
    2. Code:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source
    3. You now have a big blue dialog box (left and right keys to choose 'Yes' and 'No', Enter key proceed). Answer yes (for ISA-PNP - recommended by package maintainers), then yes again (for debugging - recommended by package maintainers).
    4. Now you must pick which driver you want to install. Use space to select and deselect modules, and up and down to navigate.
    5. From General Help step 3, you should know the name of your driver. Deselect 'all' (the * will go away), and select your driver. In my case, I deselected 'all' then selected 'via82xx'. Hit Enter. Almost home free!

      • If you chose module-assistant Code:
        sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source
If the progress bar reaches 100% with no errors, you will have installed the drivers successfully.

      • On 5 I left "all" selected. IT WORKS!!! WOOOOOT!!!! It's 'bout bedtime and I just relish ending the day on a good note such as this.

Though I am courious as to the reason for all of the "access denied"s

    Re: No sound "access denied"

    It's happening again
    Code:
    ubunterooster@Rooster:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC889A Analog [ALC889A Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC889A Digital [ALC889A Digital]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    ubunterooster@Rooster:~$
I retried step 5 looking for any "alc889a" modules. but found none. Back to square one, I guess.

I would like it if there is a way to get it to work right; failing that, some recommendations on sound cards that are at least 5.1 analog (not digital as I use analog-style speakers)

    Re: No sound "access denied"

update: Freaky how I get the funny "bibibibong" as usual on logout and KDE has sound, but not Gnome, gnome+openbox, Lxde, lubuntu, xfce, openbox...and I can't use KDE!! So I get it when their is no DE loaded (KDE does not load properly) but when I have my DE I have no sound.

    Re: No sound "access denied"

Do'uh. Ubuntu was trying to use the digital output, I just went to system>preferences>sound>Hardware and choose the analog as opposed to digital output. But then what do you expect from a Rooster, LOL. G'bye for now; I have to catch up on listening to my music
