nvidia xserver settings on HP pavilion 2713ca

I have HP pavilion 2713ca laptop with a nvidia 7150m graphic card running on xubuntu 11.10. Additional drivers reports that I have the right driver, the nvidia version 173. However, nvidia xserver settings configuration reports:
Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page: Failed to query NoScanout for screen 0.

Googling I did not found any valuable solution.

I imagine that init 3 and nividia-xconfig in root mode outside the X environment should do the job. But I am unable to get into init 3 or to issue nividia-xconfig.

Do you have any suggestion?

How come the debian method with DKMS does not work for xubuntu? See francois_e:
