because it is probably not Ubuntu 10.4 but the kernel 2.6.31-22generic for x64bit which is causing the issues. I also have not freeze but ~100% CPU use with it on 9.10.

I reverted back to the previous and everyhting seems OK. So it is a hint!!!
You may be trying to help, but you are not talking about the version we are, simple as, your older version will have older software. It makes it even harder to trace it when people confuse matters with different versions.

Also i have tested a higher kernel version and still the same issue, as others have also reported, you may be trying to help but you need to read up on this.

Well I do not see exactly how this is happening
for what I can see this is one of the longest threads I've seen, and you still haven't figured out if it is a kernel issue or something.
and yes I took a look of the reported-bugs and the kernel-versions and these starts from :
2.6.31-21.32 , -22.33 up to latest as far I can say.

So it makes perfect sense if someone on 10.04 can put kernel 2.6.31-21.XX
    for instance.

then report, with the hope at-least we can trace it back to a kernel version.
and then people still can use 10.04 but with old&stable kernel.

    or this makes no sense?

NOTE: ext3 or ext4 do not influece the esit.
P.S for Italian people... fate un'installazione da rete con l'immagine mini.iso...

Fresh netinstall? So don't download the iso?

Strange question, but bear with me, is the 10.10 A1 more stable (less crashes) than this POS they call Lucid?

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

On my machine it seems only to be a keyboard and mouse freeze which happens after login, after between 1 and 10 minutes. Last night I tried for the first time to use the "Failsafe Gnome" option when logging in and the machine has run a lot longer than any previous time. Here's holding thumbs it doesn't freeze up.

Can anyone tell me how to find which programs are disabled when running failsafe gnome?

I didn't notice anyone else mentioning this option in the thread, but perhaps someone has tried it too?

By the way, when it first started happening, I went through the whole thing of uninstalling compiz and the nvidia drivers. The nvidia drivers were garbling the screen text after grub, but before the login page, but I guess that's something for another thread.

Another update: Haven't had a freeze or crash in the last six days or so. I installed one kernel update which also didn't re-create the problem it seems, fingers crossed!

    All the best,Uwe

Don't bother the guy has no idea what he is on about. A net install with the updates is no different than keeping your current install up to date.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

I have Lucid installed on three PCs here are the devices and status:

    1. ThinkPad T41p
    ATI Mobility Radeon
Version: Lucid 32 bit upgraded from Karmic via Update Manager
    Status: stable

    2. ThinkPad T42
    ATI Mobility Radeon 7500
Version: Lucid 32 bit; fresh install
Status: random freezing; always freezing at blank screensaver; was stable with Karmic and openSUSE 11.2

    3. Custom Desktop (Intel Pentium D 805)
    ATI Radeon graphics
Version: Lucid 64 bit; fresh install
    Status: stable

I have scoured various blogs and forums and tried every suggestion I could find to stabilize the T42, including:
    a. Custom xorg.conf
    b. radeon.modeset=0 in GRUB (also tried nomodeset)
    c. Set screensaver to other than blank screen (the laptop would still freeze at some point after the screensaver kicked in)

Initially, I thought that some changes had made a difference. However, the randomness of this issue can make a one hour freeze-free session seem like an improvement. Soon enough, though, I would find the system locking every two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, etc.

However, I think I have finally found a solution without downgrading to Karmic: I had seen where some users with Intel graphics cards had experienced success downgrading the kernel to linux-image-rt (2.6.31.10.12). While I certainly don't have a need for a real time kernel, this was the only kernel in the default Ubuntu Lucid repositories that was based on 2.6.31 and not 2.6.32. I didn't want to go with a nightly build or PPA. I wanted to stick with the stock repo, if possible. Sure enough, I've been operating a day and a half without a lockup. The screensaver kicks in appropriately and comes out of screensaver mode (which the laptop previously had not done). In aggregate, I've had hours of use without any issue whatsoever. Previously, I would have expected anywhere from 4-12 freezes.

Now, this laptop still has all the various changes that I've made, so I can't tell whether it is the kernel alone or if it is the downgraded (plus real time) kernel in conjunction with one of the other changes I have made. So, I will shortly rebuild this laptop with a custom remaster (using Remastersys) with the linux-image-rt kernel as the sole change. I expect this will work without any special change to xorg.conf or GRUB, but will report back if this fails.
