    <UPDATE>
    Still up at 12 hours. I'm about to shut it down and head into work.

    I causally looked at my .xsession-errors file. It does contain a bunch of those XID collision errors.

    (firefox-bin:1884): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

    (gnome-terminal:2159): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed
    Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
    Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

    FoxyProxy settingsDir: /home/kai/.mozilla/firefox/hnuxree5.default/foxyproxy.xml

    (gnome-terminal:2320): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed
    </update>

    Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

    I have the same problem. The whole system freeze. Keyboard and mouse have no response.
    I fresh installed ubuntu 10.04 and created a new user. So I think it's no business with the .config file.
    I also tried parm noacpi in grub config and tried open source ati driver and property driver. None of them
    can solve this problem.
    My hardware is Gigabyte 785G, Athlon 630, 4G Kingston hyper DDR3 16000 memory.
    WD 500G SATA2 with ahci enable.
    My box runs well when using ubuntu 9.10.

    This bug is affecting many people since the release of 10.04 LTS. Does anybody know whether this issue is being looked at by the developers? Can we expect a fix by 10.10?

    Definitely a Lucid problem for me. Puppy Linux is solid as a rock.

    I sincerely hope this is getting looked at and a fix is imminent. It's unacceptable for an LTS release.

    I previously inquired within this thread if there is a bug report # that has been assigned to this issue. Squareman418 mentions bug report #577671. However this bug report seems specific to computers with the Asus p4s800 motherboard. The issue effects all computers with an 8xx series chip and needs to be addressed as such. If anyone knows of a bug report number for this issue please share it with us so we can track it.

    StuartN did share a link with some relevant bug info, here it is:

    I hope that we do not have to wait for the 10.10 release for a fix for this issue. Since this issue seems to revolve around pc's with the 8xx series chipsets, and since there are many folks using Ubuntu who have one of the 8xx chips, I certainly hope the developers are making this issue a priority. All eyes in the Linux world are on 10.04 right now. Ubuntu has gained so much ground as a reliable and stable OS alternative. My fear is that a bug of this magnitude may turn new users away from Ubuntu and/or Linux in general. Sorry to sound like such a complainer. I have great respect for the developers and all the time they give to making Ubuntu the best distro out there. I'm just surprised a big bug like this slipped by all the way to the final release.

    Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

    Been lurking here for a while now. I've had similar issues with my 10.04. The disabling ACPI suggestion seems to have made an improvement for my system (it's an old desktop unit). But that's a work-around, not a solution. I've dedicated one firefox tab (win XP at work ) to watching this thread.

    My motherboard is an Asus M4A78LT-M.

    Chipset: AMD RS780L.
    CPU: AMD Athlon 2 X3 435
    Graphics: integrated ATI 760G (Radeon 3000)

    Hope that helps.

    Well, it is not a simple problem with the 8XX chip set. I have this chip inside my computer, but have not had any freezes since I turned off the power management feature. Others with the same chip have experienced freezes with no common cause. I'm not sure what the problem really is. I just wish to hear from the developers that they are looking at this issue. It has been a complete silence...at least in this forum.

    Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up

    This from Bugzilla looks very interesting - a change in LibATA behaviour that should fix ATA flush failure reporting errors, committed to kernel 2.6.32:

    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16006

    Comment #4 From Tejun Heo 2010-05-19 14:40:31 -------

    FLUSH_EXT timed out which shouldn't happen but can. libata as of 2.6.32
    doesn't retry after any FLUSH failure and just returns the error to upper layer
    leading to fs ro remounting the device. The reason for the behavior is that
    FLUSH failure often indicates (abort by device always does) data loss so
    continuing RW operation is likely to cause massive filesystem corruption. As
    the behavior caused some spurious failures like this, EH was updated to
    distinguish between various FLUSH failure modes and retry unless it's certain
    that the device aborted it. So, in short, please upgrade to newer kernel or
    tell your distro to backport the update.

    Thanks.
    See also patch description http://mirror.celinuxforum.org/gitst...2642cfe557152f

    This patch adds a function ata_eh_maybe_retry_flush that is not present in /linux-source-2.6.32/drivers/ata/libata-eh.c in the Ubuntu package linux-source-2.6.32, so I assume that this commit (6013efd8860bf15c1f86f365332642cfe557152f) has not been applied in Ubuntu kernels yet?
