    random "Zebra stripe" attack

I'm running 10.04, with default themes and no extra graphics turned on, but I randomly get a black screen with white stripes on the top half that freezes the entire computer. No shortcut keys work, pressing ctrl-alt-del and enter won't shut it down, and time doesn't help anything.

All the updates are installed, and booting off of the "old" kernel doesn't help.

I can't seem to correlate this to any program in particular, or to a certain time after startup.

    Any ideas?

    Re: random "Zebra stripe" attack

The problem is still happening with me, much to the annoyance of anyone in our family who uses that computer.

I've found the section in the system log about the crashes, and it records of cycle of things I can't remember right now, but what caught my eye was the constant repetition of "GPU hung" during the times that the computer was frozen.

I'll post back later today with the exact log text.

I don't have any idea what any of this means, but it seems interesting to me that it mentions the GPU - maybe its a graphics incompatibility.

This is on a Dell Dimension 2350 with integrated graphics.

    Re: random "Zebra stripe" attack

    Post an lspci please?

    Code:
    lspci
    In the terminal.
Also, not sure how you could determine this, but do you know what graphics driver you are running? It sounds like you would be using an Intel Integrated chipset, but knowing exactly the model would help.

    EDIT:
Ah, I remember now, please also post the output of

    Code:
    lsmod
So that we can see which kernel modules you have running.

I seem to be having a similar problem. My lspci and lsmod output are different, they are below. I believe my graphics card is an Intel i915. My syslog has a good number of message sets like the following:

    Re: random "Zebra stripe" attack

My guess is that 10.04 does not like your Intel graphic card.
Last week I installed 10.04 on a machine that ran 8.04 perfectly and got exactly the same results as you have.
Any screensaver that uses open GL will trigger it. For example the Ant Spotlight.
If you cannot open the screensaver dialogue utility without causing a crash then
    press Alt+F2,
    type "gconf-editor"
    select "apps"
    then "gnome-screensaver"
then make sure that mode is set to "blank-only" and themes to "[]"

    see my screenshot for details
