Wink Fix for Audio Problem in Dell Studio 1450 (For lucid lynx)

    Hi guys,

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Studio 1450. Everything is working pretty well except my sound card. However, I could manage to fix it by following steps (this fix works including the audio jacks):

    1. Click here to download Realtek driver from Realtek website

    2. accept Terms and Conditions and click next (it will bring you to the next page)

    3. in the new page, scroll down and find Unix (linux) title , and there you will be able to see this info : Description = Linux driver (2.6), Version = 5.15rc1, in a table. Click one of "GO" links in the row of the table. It will download the driver, "LinuxPkg-5.15rc1.tar.bz2".

    4. find the driver and extract it on the file system

    5. now, start your terminal program and navigate to the extracted folder
    e.g, cd Downloads/real*/alsa-driver-1.0.xx
    6. configure:
    sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
    7. make:
    sudo make
    8. install:
    sudo make install
    9. now you may exit from your terminal and restart your computer. when it reboot again, you will hear ubuntu's login sound as usual...

More information about the driver can be found in readme.txt file under extracted driver folder.
    Trouble-shooting after installation info:
If you did some updates to kernel (also when update manager did some updates to kernel), your sound may lost again but don't be panic, just follow step 6 to 9 again to regain your sound.
Have a nice day and enjoy your ubuntu day!.

Re: Fix for Audio Problem in Dell Studio 1450 (For lucid lynx)

--Also confirmed to work in Linux Mint 9 with a Dell Studio 1458-- (although that's not much of a shock)

Thanks! I just got my Dell laptop and the first thing I wanted to do was load Linux. The sound not working properly is what has hung me up and I can't even say how many different things I've tried. This finally did it and it all works perfect.

The sad part about all this is that what I now have working in Linux is better driver support than what Dell provides for Windows 7. I'm dual-booting to a clean install of Windows 7 without all the Dell bloatware (although I kept the restore partition in-tact just in case I ever need to go back to stock), and I have yet to find drivers for my built-in wireless adapter and something that makes my 'DVD eject' key function in Windows. Both of which surprisingly work out of the box with my distro .

    Hi albanprashanth,

I found that you have not installed "Patch" package yet.

    To install "Patch",
    - Please go to Synaptic Package Manager,
    - Find "Patch" from quick search,
    - and install it.

After Patch installation, please try again.

    Best regards,
    Alex

Re: Fix for Audio Problem in Dell Studio 1450 (For lucid lynx)

I was using the alsamixer in ubuntu 10.04 on Dell 1435, and sound was working fine. However, just after upgrading in the last update, the sound completely stopped working. I thought first it might be a hardware issue, but junked it since sound was working perfect on the windows partition I have. For ubuntu, not a single sound is working, even the login screen sound at the boot. I followed the instructions in this post, and still it doesn't work. The Readme file in the realtek audiopack goes as:

    Code:

    Installation:
This Source Code is from www.alsa-project.org.
For OS installation, please remember add the Development tool kit.
For driver installation, please follow below steps.

    Automatic install: (Recommend RedHat distribution)
    execute

      ./install

Note: Ubuntu OS, please use manual install.
Run commands need to add sudo at first words.

    Manual install:
    Step 1. unzip source code
            tar xfvj alsa-driver-1.0.xx.tar.bz2

    Step 2. Complied source code
        a. cd alsa-driver-1.0.xx
        b. ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
        c. make
        d. make install

    Step 3. reboot your machine

Step 4. Use the alsamixer the disable mute (All audio line default is mute)
Must to compile and to install the ALSA library and utility. (Use automatic install is already install)
            excute alsamixer

Note: 1. The most detail information, can refer the alsa-kernel/Documenttation/ALSA-Configuration.txt in the azx-021705.tar.bz2.
        2. Kernel Version must be 2.6 or later.
        3. All mixer channels are muted by default. You must use a native
or OSS mixer program to unmute appropriate channels.
        4. If can not compile the source code, try to rename the /usr/src/linux-2.x -> /usr/src/linux.
        5. The driver added to support the SPDIF functoin.
        6. a. You can download the alsa-lib-1.0.x and alsa-utils-1.0.x form the www.alsa-project.org, then unzip and install them.
           b. Suggest use "alsamixer" to control mixer function.
           c. Used "alsaconf" can autodetect which drive you need to install (step 4).
            7. SUSE Distribution must install the ncurses package.
I couldn't completely understand how to disable all mute in alsamixer (step 4 above). Since typing alsamixer on the terminal gives this output.

I'm not sure how to get back sound on my system. Please help.
