Question 10.04 no splash screen ?

Hey, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from ubuntu 8.10, and mostly everything has been going well. However , on my old ubuntu 8.10, the bood loader didnt run, and instead has some text, showing the startup process, which was fine for me. However, after upgrading to 10.04, the screen remains blank throughout the entire boot process, and it only lights up once the desktop loads up. Is there any way to repair the bootscreen ?

EDIT : As seen on page 2 :

    This fixed it for me:

    Code:
    echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
    sudo update-initramfs -u
I found it in a couple of forum posts.

<edit> Here's another way of doing the same thing - and also how to revert if it doesn't work for you.

Re: 10.04 no boot screen ?

do you mean: no grub menu ?

with muti-boot the menu is shown, but if you have only ubuntu then grub menu is hidden by default. You need to hold "shift" key down at the end of bios process to see it.

    if not:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure plymouth

note: grub-legacy have to be removed/purged and menu.lst too, if still there, after purging:

    sudo grub-mkconfig && update-grub

No, grub is fine from what I understand. It's splash he's talking about.

Mine is the same as yours, just a blank splash screen, do you want a little picture with a loading bar or something, or do you want the text to be shown?

Sorry, i SHOULD have mentioned that. GRUB IS shown, but the boot screen, and everything after grub is blank, and the image only returns when the desktop loads up.

    EDIT:
I punched in the commands in bold, is there anything i should do/reverse, or have i not really done anything harmfull ?

EDIT 2 : Sorry, i meant splash screen(or OS load screen), i shouldnt have said bootloader.

Re: 10.04 no boot screen ?

Let's see. I think I have the same problem. The thing is that the kernel and OS list is displayed fine, but when I select Ubuntu 10.04 with ... there is no loading screen. I only see what would be very small text in the upper part of the screen and in strange colors. Then suddenly the login screen shows up. The same happens when I shutdown the system, no understandable text like there was in previous versions.
