No sound at all after plugged-in headphones

Hi to everyone,
I always had fine audio output, but when I plugged in a set of headphones (using the jack on the side of my laptop) last night, I experienced no sound at all, not on the headphones nor on the speakers. The real issue is that I miss sound after plugging out the headphones... since I didn't modify nothing...

I checked several solutions on the net and in this forum, but neither one seems to be right for my problem.

Ubuntu 9.10 on Toshiba P30-128 laptop.

thank you very much for your reply. Below you'll see what you have requested. Also, I can tell you that now headphones work, but speakers do not. I made headphones working by tweaking with PulseAudio Device Chooser...

Sorry, was pulled out of town with no notice for two days. Do this for me. Right-click the alsa-info script link in my sig and "save as" to your user folder. Then run this command in a terminal:

Open this file for editing:

Insert this line at the bottom:

Save. Close. Reboot. Check your levels in alsamixer.

Press F6 to select the correct soundcard.
Press F3 to show playback levels. F4 selects capture levels [or use <Tab>]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change levels. <M> to mute/unmute.
Go to "System ->Preferences ->Sound" and make sure the correct soundcard is default.

Nothing has changed... headphones work greatly and internal speakers don't... Here it is what I get:

Couldn't it be that when I inserted Headphones jack, I could have break any sort of "hardware mechanism" ?

In your alsamixer, showing playback, there are elements off to the right, what are they?
