Question Ubuntu Lucid Desktop to Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

My netbook is an Asus EE PC 1000. When I first got it, I switched from whatever crap OS Asus had on it to Easy Peasy, and then to Ubuntu, I think Intrepid, and I know the Desktop edition. I just went to Lucid (and now I can get back on my cloud in Ubuntu One--thanks!!).

The question is: should I convert to the Netbook Remix, or stick with the Desktop version? If the former, do I have to go the keydrive route, and wipe the computer, or can I download the remix on top of what I now have?

(I did search for the answer, but didn't find, or may have missed, it.)

    Thanks in advance.

Go to Synaptic Package Manager and search for and install Ubuntu Netbook Edition. This will install all of the stuff that makes the netbook edition what it is.

As someone who's had a netbook for the past two years (first a 7" Eee PC, and then a 10" HP Mini), I haven't found any advantage to the Netbook Edition (or Remix) interface.

I'd recommend using the regular desktop interface and deleting the bottom (or top) panel.

If you do want to install it, just install the ubuntu-netbook package. If you don't know how to install software packages, read this:

Re: Ubuntu Lucid Desktop to Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

I'm running the normal version on my Dell Mini 10v netbook and it runs perfectly.

I made a few changes to make my own "netbook friendly version"

1, Delete the bottom panel. 2, delete everything on the top panel except the menu bar, network icon, and clock. 3, add to the top panel: Window List. 4, change the menu to autohide, and 21 px. 5, follow all the directions from the link at the bottom of my post.

I did all that, and it works great! And there is a LOT more screen real estate with these changes, especially in firefox. It's great!

If nothing else, it looks cool.

I quite like maximus too. Fiddling about with windows on any touchpad is a pain, on a teensy one doubly so. It's nice to not have to bother, although windows with very little content do end up looking a bit odd.

I wish there was a way to disable the touchpad.

If the normal Desktop rocks for you then stick with it if you want a customized version of that has the same Desktop interface try eeBuntu a try.
