    System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    Only works in ubuntu 10.04
    Original thread - forum closed so I thought I'd create one here.

    Post your read benchmark results.

    Don't do read/write as I have no idea if writing is safe.

    Are the results what you are expecting? Better/worse than manufacturer suggest, or other benchmarking programs?

    Make sure to list your HDD or SSD model/size.
    Post a screenshot or text version. ALT+print screen to get just benchmark window.

    I'm using a Western Digital Caviar Blue - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136098

    Here are the results:

    It's actually a little better than I thought, considering it's such a cheap HDD. ($47.99)

    These seem low

    Master - Seagate Barracuda 160GB, 16MB cache, 7200 RPM

    Slave - Maxtor Diamondmax 160GB, 8MB cache, 7200 RPM

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    Merk,

    Those numbers are about right. The speed you get is based on platter density. Since the drives you've got are a somewhat older design (even if the drive itself is new), the amount of data on a single drive is low compared to the newer 1TB+ drives. Here are my results from HD Tune (windows 7) for a few different drives

    Maxtor 250GB
    Min 34.4 MB/s
    Max 67.3 MB/s
    Ave 54.3 MB/s
    A T 15.0 ms

    Maxtor 100GB
    Min 16.1 MB/s
    Max 62.4 MB/s
    Ave 47.6 MB/s
    A T 21.3 ms

    Samsung 400GB
    Min 30.5 MB/s
    Max 70.9 MB/s
    Ave 54.4 MB/s
    A T 14.1 ms

    Also, if you'd like to compare your results, here's a good thread with listings using HD Tune (similiar windows benchmark).

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    Anyone with a netbook with the default 160gb/250gb 5400rpm results?

    Would be nice to know those. Also would be nice to know what happens when replaced with decent 30gb SSD. If it can speed up lots of or SATA or overhead doesn't allow full speed on netbook models.

    @merk42
    For a 160gb drive that's not bad at all.

    Here is mine from 4 year old:
    320gb Hitachi 7200rpm 8mb cache
    min 37.2
    max 78.5
    avg 63.9
    access time 13.6 ms

    My ocz 32gb vertex SSD

    Minimum Read Rate: 78.3 MB/s
    Maximum Read Rate: 191.5 MB/s
    Average Read Rate: 124.3 MB/s
    AT: 0.2 ms

    for some reason the disk utility thinks its a PATA drive not a SATA Drive, so i dont know if that affects results atal
