Desktop effects (compiz) will not activate in Lucid Lynx

Hey guys,

Seems like I've had a lot of trouble lately. I recently upgraded to Lucid (took a LONG time) and I like it very much, except I cannot enable desktop effects. I had no trouble in Karmic running the effects (for the most part; I could not run the intense stuff like cube desktop at the like, but the fluid windows and stuff worked fine), but they will not enable in Lucid. I remember back in February when I first switched to Ubuntu that I had to install some plugins to make compiz work. Do they need to be re-installed or updated? Thanks in advance.

Did you install the drivers for your graphics card? If not go to System >administration > Hardware Drivers

Tried it, said that there are no proprietary drivers on my system. I have a laptop with on-board intel graphics.

@TheSumo Then I don't think your hardware is supported

I really don't understand how that would be the case. It worked fine in Karmic. Did they disable support for my hardware then?

Well, for me, many options are missing. Here is a quicklist (not complete):

cube deformations
reflections
3D windows
gears
etc.

everything was working fine in v9.10 and after upgrading, things have changed... what can I do to fix this? Am I supposed to use the terminal to download these extra packages again? I can't remember what I did to get all that working!

There were a few things in 9.10 that did not work in 10.04. Apparently they were turned off, they can be tuned back on if you install CCM.

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

It's on the menu @ System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager
