    Error occurred while mounting /proc/bus/usb

I upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 LTS via CD (alternate). Everything went okay while upgrading but after restarting I found a problem.

An error occurred while mounting /proc/bus/usb
Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

And so I have to press S everytime I turn on my laptop. Can someone tell me what I should do..
    Thanks in advance.
I am NOT good enough to help you ATM.

Re: Error occurred while mounting /proc/bus/usb

I upgraded from karmic and have exactly the same problem but appart from this , everything appears to be O.K
In a greek forum (it is in Greek, thats why I dont quote there) , I found a solution that has worked for me . If you comment the last line ( the one that says ¨none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=123,devmode=664 0 0¨ ), it doesnt appear again and USB drives work normally in Ubuntu and within VIrtualbox guest OS

    Same thing here...

You can fix this by removing this live from /etc/fstab:

    Code:
    none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=125,devmode=664 0 0
That was added in Karmic to get USB support in VirtualBox, and it seems it's not needed anymore.

But to be honest, I thought I'd have more problems than that! My installation is originally a 7.04 install, which went through all releases up to Lucid, and it's still working!

Can't say the same of my seldom-used XP partition, which has problems staying functional with only MS Updates...

97% in Ubuntu, 2% in OSX, 1% in XP and proud of it!

Thanks Kyo you saved my skin.

i too had this line added to /etc/fstab to fix Virtualbox USB support. commenting this line out has fixed the error on boot and indeed Virtualbox still works with USB drives.

This is how you can remove it:

    1. open a terminal window from the menu: Applications > Accessories > Terminal

    2. enter "sudo nano /etc/fstab" and enter your password when prompted.

    3. add # in front of the line "none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=123,devmode=644 0 0"

    4. press <Ctrl> + <X> to exit

    5. press <Y> to confirm saving the changes

    6. Leave the file name to write "fstab" and press <Enter>

Yeah dosox, whenever you see anyone telling you to "edit code", it's as easy editing a text file (which is what most of these are - no need to know how to edit Hex code, hehe!). Only difference is that if they are in a system folder, you will need to open them as root/superuser (unlike config files in your home folder), which you'd do in the terminal with a command like sudo gedit /etc/fstab (and guys - for newbies I wouldn't recommend your CLI-junkie choice of nano as the text editor to use! A GUI one like Gedit is way more easier to use, and anyone who's ever used Windows Notepad can use it).
