Beginner, Problem with sound on Ubuntu 10.04, Sony Vaio VPC-EB1M1E

Try installing gnome-alsamixer

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

Launch it from apps > sound and video > gnome alsamixer

Turn up all sliders that might be relevant (even ones that dont look it like surround or whatever)

Try running the alsa-info script again to see what's changed and what codec is being loaded.

Alright, I did some more research and it seems that only my speakers or headphones work when i plug them in. My speakers on the actuall laptop doesn't make a sound. The Volume though is extremly low and if I max things up its like listening to someone whispering. I have been in alsamixer and everything is up at max, I've tried all the different combinations in Sound Preference. I dont have a hardware for input sound, I'd really like if my mic worked aswell. *EDIT* Got my mic working when i choose Analog Sterio Duplex. Still no luck with the speakers and the low sound. *EDIT*

OK, try this. Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
Open this file for editing:

 gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Insert this line at the bottom:

 options snd-hda-intel model=vaio

Save. Close. Reboot. Check your levels in alsamixer.

 alsamixer

Press F6 to select the correct soundcard.
Press F3 to show playback levels. F4 selects capture levels [or use <Tab>]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change levels.
Go to "System>Preferences>Sound" and make sure the correct soundcard is default.

I've done what Lidex told me without any improvement. Everything in alsamixer is max. My soundcard is "Internal Audio" with 1 output and 1 input. I'm using "Analog Sterio Duplex". I have sound only in my external speakers/headphones, nothing from speakers on the actuall laptop.

I've googled alot and came across something that made me install this:

Open a Terminal window.
Type the following:

sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins "pulseaudio-*" paman padevchooser paprefs pavucontrol pavumeter

This will install the ALSA Pulse plugin, the PulseAudio daemons and the PulseAudio tools.

I hope i didn't do something stupid. Anyway.. my sound is still very low and i dont have any sound on my laptop speakers, Can i provide you with any information to make the errorsearching easier?

OK, thought I'd seen this before. I would upgrade to latest version of alsa referencing this post to get 1.0.23:

And make sure to add your info to alsa bug report so they'll fix it.

EDIT: The alsa bug report states this is fixed in 1.0.23

Ok, Now i've done it all and it starts to get on my nerves...

Somehow the Alsa driver wont update. I deleted the alsa folder and did this guide

Then I checked this command afterwords

cat /proc/asound/version

and it was still 1.0.22.1 even though i wget the 1.0.23 packages and installed them.

I've been following about 20 guides now on how to make my sound work, rebooted and hoping to get sound without any luck. I have sound in my headphones which I can barley hear and nothing from laptop speakers.

I reinstalled Ubuntu. Ubuntu regonized my aplay -l from the beginning this time but still very low sound. I followed this guide

Before I got sound to work on a Sony Vaio VPC-EB1M1E/W I had to install a new kernel as well... I'll check my exact steps when I install another machine tomorrow..

sudo apt-get install 2.6.34-1-generic-pae

And to install alsa 1.0.23 I added the PPA here..
