Re: 10.4 no volume control applet

I found this when I was in search of a resolution to the same problem. And it seems to work:

go to System > Preferences > Startup Applications

in the startup tab, look for 'Volume Control' and check it if its unchecked.

If its not there, 'Add' it using the following parameters:

    Name: Volume Control
    Command: gnome-volume-control-applet
    Comment: Show desktop volume control

    ...and then restart....

I did it but it comes with strange volume icon, not my icon set.

I'll ask the question then - why is it NOT in the panel as it has been in the past? Very frustrating to not be able to control the volume with a slider, as previously could. Is this a bug with 10.4? And has anyone figured out how to get the control up there yet?

    I followed this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...21&postcount=5

and now it's there... Hoping it stays after reboot. Odd that it wasn't there to begin with.

    Citing from http://tuxradar.com/content/discover...004-lucid-lynx

    Solution

    (SOLUTION)

    Good morning you all guys!

I installed Lucid Lynx a couple of days ago, and had some problems installing my NVidia drivers and making them work properly. After some google and some work after stopping the gdm I managed to install the latest version and have a smooth system.

But in the first reboot right after installing those drivers I noticed something different in the top panel, although couldn't tell what exactly.
I just found out this morning that both the volume and message icons were missing, and started to google. I found this thread and some many others, but none of them helped to get those icons back.
I noticed also something strange. Everytime the system booted, I could see the panel trying to load something (like a white vertical bar flashing) and after a few seconds it was just gone.

Tried setting this as an startup app: gnome-volume-control-applet, but it starts a weird volume icon and no message's.

Well, I found the solution for this. Couldn't tell why, (I'm kind of a n00b), I hope some of you explain it!

    Just open terminal and type:

    Code:
    python /usr/share/gnome-panel/add-indicator-applet.py
Both volume and message icons show up instantly, and you don't need to do anything else (don't add it to the startup apps). Reboot and see how they load properly.

    Cheeers!!

Your answer for me was spot on. Thanks so much inameiname for a simple plain English fix - spot on! :
