Exclamation Black Screen, Failed boot - 10.04 Final

    Hi all,
I'm running into a rather annoying issue with the final release of Lucid on my Toshiba Portege A100. I already had to use the alternate install disk because, I have no idea why, but the regular disk just doesn't work on this one laptop. Anyway, I went through the full installation on the alternate disk and everything was fine until the install finished and I rebooted. When I reboot, this is what happens:

    1. The TOSHIBA logo screen appears.
    2. The screen goes black, with a pulsing _ in the top left hand corner.
    3. Some time later, the screen momentarily flashes green (less than a second) then goes back to black screen with prompt.
    4. A few seconds later, the purple ubuntu splash screen appears for 2 sec, all dots suddenly turn orange and then the screen goes back to black again - no prompt this time, and no disk activity either from here on in.

    Any ideas? I'm lost...

I have exact same failure with Toshiba Satellite L-10. Urgent help needed!

Edit: I found a work around?! During grub boot options select previous kernel (2.6.31.21). Cheers!

I don't have that option in GRUB, possibly because I did a clean install. How did you install 10.04, did you update? If so, from what?

Sounds like a graphics issue. What driver are you using?

Can you get a terminal by hitting ctrl-alt-F1? If so, the run something like sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart or startx and post any errors. You may also want to look at your log files in /var/log/.
    Repair:dpkg --configure -a Reconfigure:dpkg-reconfigure pkg (-a) Fix:apt-get -f install (pkg) Nuke:dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq -r pkg Corrupt deb:rm /var/cache/apt/archives/pkg Hack dpkg:rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/pkg* Chroot unbootable ubuntu

No luck with ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2). I'm not sure what driver I'm using, or what graphics chip is actually in this laptop. I only acquired it 2 days ago, but after doing a little research on the 'net I think it may have the Intel 855GM...

I have the same exact symptoms on a Toshiba Portege M300.
