Thumbs down 10.04 and USB 3G modems (modeswitch)

    Hello all,

Do the newer USB 3G modems which use the modeswitch via the driver work natively in Ubuntu 10?
I have an older Three modem which will work fine but I've not tried my new Vodafone one yet (installing on Saturday).

    Thanks

Apparently, with a revised usb_modeswitch, but I have not tried it - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1454283

    • First check if the device configurers without the modeswitch
    • If it is not recognised and an icon appears and the desktop try right click with mouse and eject or safely remove the device then see if will configure
    • if nothing happens , open up the terminal and enter this command

    Code:

    dmesg | grep -e "modem" -e "tty"

this will show if the modem has been identify and the lines { ttyx } and possible the driver x is the type like ttyUSB0 or other

if it shows up the you may have a software configuration problem . check the details of the your ISP are correct if in doubt ask your ISP

    • If nothing shows enter this command from the terminal

    Code :

    lsusb

this will give the ID's of the device

    • look to see if your device is listed in the latest modeswitch.setup
    • check

Vodafone Huawei K3765 USB modem works perfectly with 10.04 after installing usb-modeswitch-data (Synaptic Package Manager). Only item I had to edit was the choice between prepay and postpay and then apply. Big relief after I'd spent a lot of hours (and research) to trying unsuccessfully to get it to work with 9.10.

Just want to add a quick "Me Too!" to push this up the rankings. I'm posting this via Voda mobile, so works great!

Just to put in my 2p worth, my vodafone K3565 works flawlessly,
    You could always try this:-

    www.betavine.net/bvportal/resources/datacards

and look for vodafone mobile connect.

    Luck

Re: 10.04 and USB 3G modems (modeswitch)

I'm still running 9.10 and having patchy success after installing usb-modeswitch.

The modem generally works on the second or third connection attempt, but if the computer goes to sleep it's completely unusable until an unplug & reboot or two.

I'll try upgrading and see if I have more success.
