x86 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 very low display resolution

I purchased a lenovo G550 recently and immediately dumped the Windows OS for Ubuntu 9.10. The display is currently defaulting to 1366x768. From reading it looks as though this display can support both 16:9 and 16:10 aspects. I have ran through the xrandr commands attempting to set my resolution to something...anything bigger than 1366x7768 (I'm used to 1600x1200 from my old T61, so this is painfully small). As a test I am trying to get 1920 1200, from my xrandr results it looks like it should be within the lcd's range. xrandr commands failed on me as I have seen on a couple other intel based resolution problems. I don't fully understand the root of the problem and have not had any luck in my searches. So I have also attempted to manually create the xorg.conf file, not luck yet. Any help will receive 1 million internets from me

Below is my second attempt, with almost all the misc info stripped out.
    Code:
    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier "Monitor0"
    	VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
    	ModelName "Monitor Model"
    	HorizSync 24 - 82
    	VertRefresh 50 - 75
    	Modeline "1920x1200" 193.25 1920 2056 2256 2592 1200 1203 1209 1245 -hsync +vsync
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier "Device0"
    	Driver "intel"
    	VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller"
    	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier "Screen0"
    	Device "Device0"
    	Monitor "Monitor0"
    	DefaultDepth 16
    	SubSection "Display"
    		Depth 24
    		Modes "1920x1200"
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection
I've gone out to the intel site to try and verify driver information but require privilege access to get the reference manual which looks like it should have information about supported modes. I have requested access, eta under 2 days.

Looking over my xorg.conf I notice that the monitor seems to be unknown, not sure if that is relevant, from other posts I tend to think not.

I've been working with this issue on and off for a month now, would be good to know if is even possible given my hardware.

Re: x86 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 very low display resolution

The native resolution of your laptop display is 1366x768, and from what you posted, it does not appear that you have an external display connected (LVDS1 is your laptop display and X says nothing else is connected). So it is unclear what you are trying to achieve by trying to force your laptop display to a higher resolution than it is.

If you want higher resolution, you either need a different laptop, or an external display (a 32" 1080p HDTV works well). If you want to get more text on the screen, you can change font sizes in System > Preferences > Appearance.
