Maybe the phrase is not totally correct now, but could be in short time. Canonical is making a strong effort to commercialize Ubuntu, so it would be not surprise in a few years time, Ubuntu to emerge as the Linux basic-main expression. If Lucid Lynx is a success, all the possibilities are open. Remember the case with Internet Explorer. It started as the only navigator and now after a few bad steps (and maybe after a few hits below the belt) is becoming rapidly No 2. Canonical is waiting for the right moment to attack. Windows 7 is not a failure as Vista but by noway is a success. The fight now begins. I have the feeling that we will see Ubuntu as the "Firefox of the OSs" very shortly.

Maybe -- if Ubuntu can somehow shake their reputation for buggy releases!

I'm under the impression that most Ubuntu users know that there are various Linux types. I think the fact that Ubuntu is a 'Linux distribution' can confuse new users, since they probably won't know what a 'distribution' is. It also doesn't help that Ubuntu doesn't link to other distributions on its home page.
