Gimp question: how to combine two halves of a picture?

Umm, not really sure if this is the right place, but "absolute beginner" seems about right...basically, I drew an A3 picture which was scanned into another computer as 2 separate images, each one a half of the picture, and recieved the picture as 2 separate files. I'd like to colour it on Gimp, which I'm trying to get my head around, but I don't know how to "put the picture together" to make it one large image...
