Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

    hello world !

I been a member here many years ago. actually I think its nearly ten years ago or something like that. I thought I would join again so here I am.
I been using linux since then and I am happy with it , I was a devoted Debian user before I switched to ubuntu at the time fiesty fawn was released and I tested it and started using ubuntu more and more.

today linux is very different than when I started out. I installed corel linux from a img booklet with a CD that had linux corel on it as the first linux version I installed. then a red hat from same publisher and then I got internet and downloaded Debian and bought open suse and red hat box sets and just distro hopped a few years before I finally settled on using Debian on one computer and ubuntu on the other.

today I just install ubuntu as the first choice and if its older hardware Debian was the go to distro before but now I am starting to tinker with BSD instead .

the forums seems the same as back then. some of the moderators are even the same. I am impressed with the stability this forum offers and I am happy to be back.

Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

Hello, Jim Palmer here. I'm a nueb to the forum and Ubuntu. I live in Bellevue WA which is a suburb of Seattle. My home is about 2 miles from the Microsoft mother ship (Redmond). I am old enough to span back to the pre-internet days and remember what the business world was like when the only computers were mainframes and ran by specialist operators, programers and data input was a career choice. My goal is not to break completely free of Microsoft's domination, but to learn new skills in the open source communities. My home network consists of three home built desktop PCs that run Win10, one desktop running Ubuntu 19.10, two laptops on Win10, one laptop on Ubuntu 16.04 (I think) and two tablets. There is some smart enabled devices: a couple of Dots, two wifi lamp switches and a smart thermostat. My other hobbies include classic Honda motorcycles and radio control models and drones. I would like very much to include micro computers in each of these hobbies. The current project is to set up a video surveillance system around the house. Linux is something I have always wanted to learn. I started with the Ubuntu laptop a couple of years ago. I was trying to edit video with it and the PC just didn't have the needed power and I found the Linux command line very intimidating so I went back to Windows. Since then we have decided to build the home security system. I have put together a PC from parts I have laying around the house. I have been looking at ZoneMinder as the app. It requires Docker to be installed and other installations at the command line. I have been reading as much as I can about the Linux syntax and are starting to get it. Any help is going to be be very appreciated and I hope to be able to give back to the community in the near future. JimP

Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

    Hello!

I started with Ubuntu in 10.10 on a Dell XPS M1530? Because of the fantastic Vista that was in. I had a bit of trouble getting wifi going, but when 12.xx came it was ok.

Some years ago, I got a friend who had a connection with used leasing Lenovo Thinkpads. Now I have a T430s 8G RAM, SSD, dual display and it all works!

I think they will all go open source in the end!

No snow here midnight, Sandvika, Oslo.

    Have fun!
