Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

Hi My name's Gabriel. I've been using Ubuntu for about 3-4 months now. I used to use it a while ago back in 12.04 as a dual boot but at the time found that it lacked some of the apps I needed and I found installing things to be overly cumbersome. Decided to make the switch and fully installed the latest version (13.04 at the time) since Windows 7 was slower than I liked on my computer, there was a wider availability of apps, and I thought that the changes in Ubuntu since the last time I tried it seemed cool. I'd like to be able to contribute to Ubuntu in the form of app development, so hopefully in my time here I'll be able to learn more about programming, which has been a huge goal of mine. Also, I'd definitely be interested in contributing to Ubuntu in a promotional, marketing sort of aspect, and in designing different changes that could be made to the desktop OS to make using it an even better experience. Recently left a different forum that I was a big contributor on so hopefully I'll be able to have a similar effect over here

Hello, I'm Christian, as you can see by my username. I used to be a windows type of guy, until (recently) I participated in CyberPatriot (a competition by the US Airforce) and I was placed on the Ubuntu team. Ever since I started working with the Ubuntu machines, I just fell in love. It was so much nicer looking, and better feeling than Windows. Also, another thing I like to do is program, and I've heard from many people that this OS is great for it. This is my first time ever really using something away from Windows, and I'm hoping I enjoy it as much as I has been, as I discover more and more things that this OS can offer.

Also, if you guys don't mind me asking; Could you post some good links to read up on for things I should know about Linux/Ubuntu? For terminal work/programming, or anything else that would be good to learn up on. Thanks!

P.S. I love these forums, they've been a really good resource for any questions I've had so far!

    Welcome to the forums!

There are a lot of posts suggesting good reference materials. Please search the Absolute Beginners forum. If you still want more, start a new thread in that forum. Although we would prefer not to repeat ourselves, we won't bite too hard when people ask a question again.

I am Michael. I have looked at Ubuntu for a while. I used it to create an internal server for my intranet. I like the flexibility and OS should use more of the computer or there is no reason it should be an OS. I hate MS because they come out with new OS and it takes years to get it right even at all. I.E. Windows 98, Millennium. Ubuntu comes with aq lot of stuf and I would like to know more about it. Games I get but other software I guess I will just have to understand and pick up along the way.

Hello forum. I have an old Asus 1000HE, and with XP coming up on end of life I'm figuring on using it to play with Linux. I know practically nothing; however most of the discussion I've found concerning the eee PC's and Linux involved Ubuntu, so that has brought me here.

    Hello ubuntu people!
I am Robert, I am 20 yo and i am starting to like ubuntu more with each day passing by! The fact is this is not my first encounter with ubuntu, I used ubuntu for almost a year when ubuntu 11.10 released. Then i switched to windowsbecause i wanted to play a series of games that time. But now i have discovered this amazingly buit Elementary OS. I like how it looks, how it feels and how it is running on my pc. My pc is a 2009 build with 4 gigs of RAM, 2.66 quad core, 1 gig of video card and 500 gigs of disk space. Pretty decent for my needs. I intend to buy a WACOM tablet so i can make some design. I believe i can run Photoshop and other adobe products right?
I think that's it for my presentation, I will be more active aften my exams . Have a great day/evening.

    Welcome.

Adobe products? Photoshop??? You might be better off looking for alternatives. The Gimp is a good substitute for Photoshop. Photoshop will NOT run natively on Ubuntu. You will need to jump through a few hoops, namely by installing Wine which will run some MS programs, but not all, and not all well.

Anyhow, as this is a non-support thread in a non-support sub-forum, ask any question in a new thread in the appropriate support area.

Good luck, enjoy the OS, the forums and the learning curve.

(PS: Elementary OS is not officially supported in the main support areas of these forums, but you can post in Other OS support sub-section for any questions about it.)

Adobe hates Linux. Saying that, there are other things like Bucky mentioned, Gimp. Also I believe Mypaint. Anyway welcome to the forums everyone.

Don here. I moved to Ubuntu in late 2012. What a relief! I had played with Red Hat back in the '90s, and Open SUSE in about 2009, but the user interface and software never gelled for me until recently. I use Win 7 at work (must), and Ubuntu, Zorin, Puppy, or the x86 port of Android at home, depending. I don't know much about the terminal or setup (managed to blow a server install by monkeying around with Grub) (no harm, it was an experiment) but I'm learning. It's a huge relief to be able to opt out of Windows. I also run an old iMac... well, a couple, since one is furnished with Lubuntu.

    Anyway, glad to be here!
