Unhappy sound card "forgets" the 5.1 setting

I'm new to linux, and trying to migrate from win 7... I'm using UBUNTU 9.10 and I have an ASUS M4A78 PRO motherboard with VIA VT1708S AUDIO on it. I set the hardware in sound properties to 5.1, and it's working fine. When i stop the music (does not matter in which player), and trying to start is again, only the 2 front speakers are working. when I open sound properties again, then the 5.1 hardware is selected, I need to select something else, and select the correct hardware again, that solves the problem, but only until I don't stop the music again, the it "forgets" the 5.1 setting again... ANY HELP is welcome..

    thanks in advance!

There are lots of things you can do, I would do a clean install of system, update and try again.

I wish I could help, but this is the only idea came up in my head.

    Wish you will fix that.
