    Having trouble with pppoe connection

Well I'm struggling with this problem for 2 months and no fix, no nothing. No one knows what to do and how to help me. It's simple, i have a pppoe connection. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't....it's not the connection, on win xp a separate machine has 4 days uptime. Basicly ubuntu hangs up my connection when it wants. If i check plog in the terminal i get modem disconnected.
The problem is as same as this log found on the internet:
    bogdan@ubuntu:~$ plog
    bogdan@ubuntu:~$ pon dsl-provider
    Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.

Don't quit! Every problem has a solution!

    Are you ADSL?

    Who is your ISP?

Can you paste your peer file in? (make sure you remove your password from what you paste!)

Not adsl, I have a fiber optic cable in my house and from there there is a spliter that splits this fiber optic into 2 separate slots. One for my telephone line and one for a utp cable. I connect to the internet using that cable and a username and password provided by my isp. My isp has no problems, my connection has no problems I can assure you. The same connection on windows has uptime of over 4 days...I had 11 days uptime, no disconnects but I had to shut down the computer because I had to leave on vacation. The problem is clearly not my isp but something in ubuntu. I'm a beginner don't know what would help you more or what info to post. The thing is simple, my pppoe connection is not stable in ubuntu.

Please understand that nobody is just saying your connection is bad - instead, please do as they have asked and post the information asked for. We all know from our own experiences starting out that it can be frustrating at times, but please understand everyone is trying to help. More information is needed as previously mentioned. What type of PC? What is the model/type of the "card" your fiber connects to?

Also, you said "....it's not the connection, on win xp a separate machine has 4 days uptime" - don't assume that if one computer is working that another "has" to - somethings might need to be changed or tweeked.

Let's start with some other basic information as well as that requested by others already:

    in a terminal:

    lspci

    and

    lsusb

Post the output from both of those back here along with the additional output requested from others previously, and we'll try to go from there.

Something very similar to this happened to me back on 7.10.

I upgraded to 8.04 when it came out, and I had no issues since.

Maybe you can try another distro?

Ubuntu is not the only easy Linux OS. Try Mint.

Mint is basically Ubuntu with a couple of extra programs; so if you're having a problem with Ubuntu you will have the same problem in Mint.

To the OP: It seems that Ubuntu is continually sending requests to the modem or router or whatever it is, in order to determine whether the connection is still up. But those requests, or at least some of them, are not getting through.

There may be a setting in your PPP configuration file that allows you to limit the number of requests it makes, or increase the number of requests that can fail to be returned before Ubuntu assumes that the connection is broken.

Also, try a different Ethernet cable, and make sure it isn't next to any devices that are putting out a lot of electromagnetic interference (like a microwave...).

I have never needed to use PPPoE from any Linux distribution so I really can't help with finding options in any PPP configuration files; it would be the blind leading the blind.

If you have a modem or router or something at your house (which I assume would be the case), it may have a web-based interface and the ability to initiate the connection itself. If this is the case, then definitely use it! That's what most ADSL and cable broadband modems do by default.

Definitely doesn't make sense for ISPs to require PPPoE on the computer, because of the number of home networks and net-connected game consoles out there!

I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
