    Can not boot WinXP

    Can't Boot WinXP
    I have WinXP on 160 GB HD @ /dev/sda1.
    I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a 250GB HD @ /dev/sdb1.
    I have Mint 7 on the 250 GB HD @ /dev/sdb4.
After I installed Ubuntu 9.10 I can no longer boot to WinXP.
I hope the following maybe be of some help in solving my problem!! It looks to me like the MBR
has been changed but I don't have enough knowhow to really know what is going on?

    Re: Can not boot WinXP

    Hallo.
I am afraid I cant tell you definitely how to fix it, but I think this is what is wrong

    Code:
Boot sector info: Grub 2 is installed in the boot sector of sda1 and
looks at sector 271303 ofthe same hard drive for
core.img, core.img is at this location on /dev/sdb and
                           looks for
                           (UUID=da6c0604-0b41-49cd-b226-a309fd7a1d5f)/boot/grub.
    Code:
    Device UUID TYPE LABEL

    /dev/sda1 1475ECE9C353C869 ntfs Win160
    /dev/sda5 5E500F31500F1007 ntfs Win 160 BU

    /dev/sdb5 c07ed73d-c919-4a5d-9c04-b3148b49dda0 swap

    /dev/sdb8 4bfdf54d-ffe9-49ce-9d06-5ae1bbc7995f ext3 /homem
    /dev/sdb9 555e23cc-0208-4f11-a4cc-cfa8137b9f04 ext3 /miscm
Read the red, then the blue. Grub 2 is looking for core.img on sda, but it is on sdb.
The UUID in green does not appear in the UUID table. It might be a relic of the mint install, perhaps.

All I can suggest is to do
    Code:
    sudo update-grub
    and see if that helps.

    Re: Can not boot WinXP

That grub audiomick is pointing to is not the boot grub in the MBR but a grub installed to the partition - PBR. Sometimes we want grub in a partition for chainbooting but normally not.

Did you do anything to install grub to sda1 and sda? This has to be the 4th in two days that I have seen this problem. Windows has essential boot files in the windows PBR.

You need to run the fixboot command to write the windows command back to the boot sector on the partition (PBR).

I am just copying the full set of commands but you only need to run fixboot. Do not run fixmbr unless you want to directly boot windows and then reinstall grub.

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
    2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
    3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
    4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
    5. At the command prompt, type this commands one at a time.

    FIXMBR C:
    FIXBOOT C:
    COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTLDR C:\
    COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
    BOOTCFG /rebuild

    Re: Can not boot WinXP

I ran the following commands & I again have access to WinXP THANK YOU.

    FIXMBR C: No problem
    FIXBOOT C: No problem
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTLDR C:\ Command not recognized.
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ Command not recognized.
    BOOTCFG /rebuild No problem
The above two C:\ were not underlined when sent.
After sending these commands I got the following.
Add installation to boot list I sent a Y
Enter Load Identifier I hit enter key
Enter OS Load Options I hit enter key
This got me the following “Error: Failed to add the selected boot entry to the list.”
I do not understand what is going on but things seem to be working!!
When you get your final set of commands would you send a copy to me @ billjuneau@yahoo.com.

    Re: Can not boot WinXP

You did not have to run all the commands unless the fixboot did not work by itself. No harm, but you should only be booting windows. If you want ubuntu back you will have to reinstall grub to sda and run sudo update-grub to get grub to find the windows and add it to its menu.

The 2 commands that did not work were to copy files from the Windows CD if the existing files were not correct. Location may be different??

Follow directions to reinstall grub2 from liveCD. Be sure to install to sda not anything else.
