9.10 vs Laserjet P1005

So I convinced a friend to scrap his copy of XP and try Ubuntu 9.04. He does and upgrades to 9.10.

His printer is an HP Laserjet P1005 and it was working fine with XP. Now, it isn't even detected in 9.10. I've opened a browser to http://localhost:631 and tried to find the USB printer but no luck. I can load the drivers but it is useless since the printer is not found.

Any thoughts?

Plug the printer in, open a terminal, type dmesg and post the last few lines here.

In general, HP printers are really well supported, with HP even supplying a driver under the GPL license.

Problem solved.

A huge noob mistake...in a gaggle of USB cables the wrong cable was plugged in.

How embarrassing. :-[

As a follow-up.

My friend is completely thrilled with Ubuntu 9.10. He needs basic word processing and spreadsheet software (OpenOffice), a good browser (Firefox), and tools to download and burn torrents to CD/DVD. He says his box is now so much faster than the previous Windows OS and it keeps on going and going and ... His only observation is that Windows products are generally prettier.

I'm wondering if not running A/V software helps the speed of his box.

I just wish CoffeeCup products, Home and Landscape Design, and Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 were usable on Ubuntu. Until then, I will on a Window box 95% of the time.
