I managed to retrieve the log files you asked for and attach them here as a .zip archive.
I rapidly run through the files and I didn't find anything suspicious though...
But you are the expert, not me!

Just for the records, you mentioned /var/log/install/ but it is actually /var/log/installer/ !!!

PS: I forgot to use the verbose option, so I repeated the process and attached the resulting srchive with verbose logs!

We have made Linux to boot from a VHD file, so the disk can be dynamic in size, i.e., self expanding. We wanted to contribute to add this support to Ubuntu, potentially on Wubi.

Here has more info, along with a pre-installed 9.10 VHD file that pretty much boots all computers.

I would be glad to add VHD as new file format for the next release, provided it is compatible with our license. Please add a feature request to the Wubi launchpad page with any relevant link.

Sorry if I haven't replied, it is not a major bug so I overlooked it. As you mentioned, if you wait, it works. I am not sure why the grub2 disk scanning of the drives is so slow, but the workaround is simply to copy wubildr to the first partition of your disk. There was a recent bug report on the subject recently to which I replied.

Any idea on whether it's possible to provide pre-installed Ubuntu VHDs on the website for people to download? This way, people don't even need to install the OS. Simply download, and boot. (need to configure boot loader, of course)

I managed to retrieve the log files you asked for and attach them here as a .zip archive.
I rapidly run through the files and I didn't find anything suspicious though...
But you are the expert, not me!

Just for the records, you mentioned /var/log/install/ but it is actually /var/log/installer/ !!!

PS: I forgot to use the verbose option, so I repeated the process and attached the resulting srchive with verbose logs!
PS: I also forgot to mention that I used WUBI_r182.exe to make the tests.
