Developing desktop application

Hi,

I am a newbie here. I have been using ubuntu for few months now and I want to develop a desktop application on ubuntu for learning purposes. I want to know the starting point for this. Any relevant documents to get me started on this?

If this is not the right forum, please point me to correct one.

There are in fact a lot of relevant documents on that topic; it would be helpful if you'd tell us in what Programming Language you want to write your Desktop Application.
