    Unhappy Mouse not working

I am ubuntu code newbie. I searched the messages boards and tried a few of the suggestions but nothing applicable or has worked.

I have a generic USB mouse that is non-responsive. The "red light" lights up underneath it, so I assume the USB port works (i tried all three). I am trying to get it to work, but will not move cursor at all. The touchpad on the laptop works, (but annoying to use for a lng time).

    I have a Gateway W340UI laptop
    running Ubuntu 9.10
I did have to turn aspic=off (or something like that) in order to get Ubuntu to work. Also removed the "splash" thing at start up.

    I completely removed Windows.

ANy suggestions or help please advise. I will run the terminal to print whatever code you need for more info.

    Thanks so much.
