    Best compatible hardware

Ok guys, I'm venturing into the unknown. Well...for me anyway. I'm looking to build a completely, 100% Linux compatible computer. BUT, I want the very best hardware that is compatible. I would just like to know the opinions of the forum peeps. It would be much appreciated. I intend on doing a custom case too, I'll put pics up as I go. Its very much a work in progress tho! lol

    Cheers.

Define 'best'. Theres lots of criteria that could be used to define it.

Got $5,000+ US? LOL 'highest performing' would be as many Intel Xeons or AMD Opterons as you can afford.

I doubt that would be what you are after, even though server level computers have features that normal computers dont have in 99% of cases (EEC ram is one of the nicer ones...redundant power supplies are neat, and hot-swap SCSI/SAS drives are impressive).

You are probably after an AMD Phenom II X4 965 or one of the i7s. A high-end i7 would have more performance than the AMDs, but with the top end i7s going for $1000 US (and gawds only know how much in the UK) they are only for those with money to burn.

What sort of budget are you looking at?

hehe I dunno about budget. I'm doing it gradually over time but I won't be making a budget machine. I want it to be comparable with the high end machines on the market today. If not better.
