Why the name change for the Multimedia Production support category?

The thread title says it all. Why the name change to Ubuntu Studio? I hang around there because I do multimedia production with Ubuntu but I don't use Ubuntu Studio. I already see a shift to Multimedia & Video when it comes to certain questions and I don't feel like monitoring multiple categories simply because the Ubuntu forums are a busy place (which is a very, very good thing of course ).
Also, how was this communicated? Did I miss something? Where are these kind of changes announced? The Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

Ubuntu Studio has been round for a couple of years now, and is a separate edition of Ubuntu in its own right.

And because people involved in Ubuntu Studio are also involved in that section of the forums and are the best resource we know of for helping people make use of the media options discussed there. There is no requirement that anyone switch to Ubuntu Studio to find/receive help in that section, but with the growing popularity of Ubuntu Studio, this makes the section more easily found for most people looking for help.

Thanks for your replies. I disagree with you though. First of all there are also no seperate forums for any other flavor of Ubuntu (except for Ubuntu Moblin Remix). Second, it does make the section more easily found for people starting with Ubuntu Studio which is already becoming clear. One could argue that's a good thing, that shows the validity of the decision, but when looking at the actual extra topics that get created it will become clear that a lot of those topics belong in other sections. Third, I disagree that people involved in Ubuntu Studio are also the best resource for helping people make use of the media options discussed there. It is the people who actually use these media options that know best. And not all of them use Ubuntu Studio.

I really liked the Multimedia Production section. Why? Because it was discernable, practically no other Linux and/or distro forum has such a section, yes maybe Arch and then there's LinuxMusicians but Ubuntu just has the biggest community so the Multimedia Production section was really valuable. I fear that in a few months this section will be a second General Help section, but then for Ubuntu Studio. If so notable posters might leave the section because it is of no interest for them anymore. When I speak for myself, I just don't feel like troubleshooting someone's graphical card, I want to help people out making music with Ubuntu.

    Best,

    Jeremy

Re: Why the name change for the Multimedia Production support category?

I agree with the very well made points above, and thought I could add some evidence for why the previous name was preferable.
Firstly a lot of new (and some old I imagine) users do not know what Ubuntu Studio is (either the distro itself or what is supposed to come under the forum heading) and so post audio/video production questions into multimedia and video, where they are buried under a much higher quantity of posts about a broad range of topics. By inadvertently shifting prospective posts from a relatively quiet forum and into a busy one you are losing the opportunity for solving users problems. Examples:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1445319
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1441312
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444681
Secondly, as mentioned above, the US forum is getting an increase in general help type questions about wireless connections and other non production issues. These either stay there or someone has to move them to the appropriate place. Examples:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1214983
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1445034
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444840

There are better ways than this to promote Ubuntu Studio.
