Ubuntu installation 250 gb hdd question

I hope I will not bother anyone but I came across a funny problem. I installed ubuntu 9.10 on a brand new 250 hdd and I went on my home folder to check how much space I have. And surprise, I have only 205 gb. HUh? I don't think ubuntu ocupies 40 gb space and I have nothing installed or other files such as media files..games and things like that only Ubuntu. Why 40 gb are gone? THis is a 250 gb drive on a 64 bit 9.10 ubuntu.

Re: Ubuntu installation 250 gb hdd question

    "250 GB" hard drive = 250,000,000,000 bytes / 2^30 bytes in a gigabyte = 232.83 GB

but 205 gb is too small. can you run
    sudo fdisk -l

in the terminal (under accessories in the menu), and post the output?

that is how much room your home folder has as free space but this is in no way your full system free space. If you want to know your system free space I suggest checking the properties of the folder called filesystem or better yet use gParted to see what your HDD data usage looks like.

can you see that there are 3 partitions?, that is why you have 205 gb in home.

To check individual partition sizes in more human readble way,
go to system > administration > system monitor
there in the File system menu, you'll see the sizes.

And, I think you have put rather a large space in the / directory.

Re: Ubuntu installation 250 gb hdd question

I have checked system monitor and I have /dev/sda1/ -ext4- which has a total of 219,9 gib, free 216,5 available 205,3 and used 3,4. Is this ok? I'm still a little confuse why I there it says 205,3 gib available. 250 minus 3,4 doesn't give me only 205,3 gib to use.
And by the way I putted nothing nowere, I erased the disk entirely and let ubuntu partition it by the way he wanted.

well well, see above my first reply to your question, a 250gb hdd does not actually mean 250gb!

Re: Ubuntu installation 250 gb hdd question

    open a terminal and run

    Code:
    df -h
then use the quote tags to post the info here
    Debian Testing(64bit) + XFCE4 AM2 5200+ ATI Radeon HD4350, 4gig RAM,320Gig and 750gig HDs

what's the difference between an answer and a solution? An answer is what they want to hear, a solution is what they don't want to hear

I get available space 205,3 in system monitor. And a total of 219,9 gib which is not equal with your 232.83 gib. Sorry is just that it's confusing. I don't understand why I have there free space 216,5 gib but available only 205,3 gib. And why if you have a 250 hdd you can't use 250 gb? Why is it then a 250 gb then? Sorry, I don't mean to be rude or something is just that I don't understand.

By the way thank you for your help.
