How to connect to a windows network at work

I need local help on how to connect to my work's windows network. I have a desktop pc with Ubuntu 9.1 I have my username and password from the network, but I don't know how to set it up with Ubuntu. Plz help.

Do you use a "special" program on a windows machine to connect? Perhaps FTP, Remote Desktop, VPN?
