I did this a few days ago and now when I try to install something, I get the following error from either gdeb or the add/remove app:
Could not download all repository indexes
How would I go about fixing this?Archive directory /var/cache/apt/archives/partial is missing.

This "How To" is pitifully in need of updating to explain (without having to fish through the comments) that gstreamer plugins, etc. are going to be deleted if you follow the thing "step by step". Shame on 'Tutorial of the Week' for not pointing this out.
This tutorial is great. It cleaned up a lot of files I didn't know about.
I agree, though, that the section about orphaned packages should be updated. Luckily, it didn't remove any plugins for me, but it'd be a good update. Maybe take out section #4 and just have #5.
gtkorphan is a graphical interface for using deborphan to find and remove orphaned packages. It's a little easier to use than the method in tip #4 in that you can look over all of the orphaned packages that it finds, and then simply check the ones that you want to remove...

I've got CDO. It is like OCD except all the letters are in alphabetical order, as they should be.
thanks for the howtos. i did all the tips. but how do i know the effect of this cleaning. does my ubuntu works faster? what do those junks have in effect to the system? slow down. if so, then i did the right move.
