This bug continues to exist. When I opened an MP4 video clip as a test, I had to reinstall the Mediubuntu-sourced Gstreamer plug-in.

Tyvm Wack for this amazing thread. I've been looking for a way to get rid of those junk packages.

Also, that "sudo apt-get cow" line was HILARIOUS!!

I did this a few days ago and now when I try to install something, I get the following error from either gdeb or the add/remove app:

Could not download all repository indexes

    Archive directory /var/cache/apt/archives/partial is missing.
How would I go about fixing this?

This "How To" is pitifully in need of updating to explain (without having to fish through the comments) that gstreamer plugins, etc. are going to be deleted if you follow the thing "step by step". Shame on 'Tutorial of the Week' for not pointing this out.

Re: HOWTO: Cleaning up all those unnecessary junk files...

This tutorial is great. It cleaned up a lot of files I didn't know about.

I agree, though, that the section about orphaned packages should be updated. Luckily, it didn't remove any plugins for me, but it'd be a good update. Maybe take out section #4 and just have #5.

Re: HOWTO: Cleaning up all those unnecessary junk files...

gtkorphan is a graphical interface for using deborphan to find and remove orphaned packages. It's a little easier to use than the method in tip #4 in that you can look over all of the orphaned packages that it finds, and then simply check the ones that you want to remove...
