If you like GUI tools, and want to see a visual representation of your HD space, Filelight, a program that can be installed from Synaptic, might prove useful. I use it regularly to make sure that directories (like hidden trash cans) aren't filling up with stuff.
Thanks for this. Having only had ubuntu for about 2 weeks I keep getting this feeling I might be accumulating all sorts of rubbish but don't know where to look for it so I feel much better now.
And thanks for the really clear step by step instructions that I think event the newest user could cope with.
Thanks for the easy-to-follow tips.
I removed almost 2 gigs.
Thanks for this perfect how to, realy liked it, i can use ubuntu only because of these kinds of posts. thanks again.
I think this is the same thing as the gui method for clearing the old .deb packages out of synatic. I use it often.
sudo rm -f /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
The first time I used WackToMac's how to I ran
as indicated in Tip #4 but never did dare again ever since because, as I recall, it messed things up for me.Code:sudo deborphan | xargs sudo apt-get -y remove --purge
