GA75M AMD A4 quad core, 4GB RAM. A very modest quiet, cool running machine with Radeon HDMI in the chipset. A year old (at least) obsolescent design bought at clearance.
I started by attempting to install 12.04. From a USB stick and from a CD. The Asus DVD grinds for a while and simply goes to sleep, screen goes dark. I tried a collection of older install CDs including a mix of Canonical distributions Ubuntu and Kubuntu and my own home burned CDs, versions 6.1 thru 11.04.
The only Ubuntu version that installs, updates and reboots normally is 11.04. The screen res comes up 1280x1024 and looks pretty good. Everything seems to work OK, but only with this distribution.
Why 11.04?? I tried updating to 11.1 and it commits suicide. What is it about this system that is peculiarly compatible with 11.04?
Did I make a mistake in attempting to use the FM1 CPU? An oddball system? Should have stuck with an older 64x2? Driver problem? I burned a fresh DVD @4x 12.04.1 and No Joy, DOA again.
Yes I'm new to Linux (again). Haven't used it for a couple of years. Thanks.
