I looked up your laptop, I would say I would recommend at least 512 for karmic, but I am unsure for beryl. I do see a problem here your running ATI so you need to run the newest version of Ubuntu for it to work right, but then it would only run 2d mode instead of 3d mode. It might not need a driver so you most likely need to run the newest Ubuntu out there for to support your graphics card.
